The Australian Mining Corps was a precursor to the early tunnelling companies. 

The conception of a seperate and indetifiable Australian contribution to the mining was has been attributed to Lieutenant J. Thomson, a Western Australian mining engineer, but T.W. The popular belief is that T.W> Edgeworth David, Professor of Geology at Sydney University and Ernest Skeats, Professor of Geology at Melbourne University proposed formation of the Mining Corps to the Federal Government early in 1915.<ref>http://fffaif.org.au/?p=7495, Accessed 28 September 2014.</ref>
