A town in the Ballarat Electorate. It is a southern suburb on the rural-urban fringe of Ballarat. Between 1864 and 1994 it had its own municipal status, merging into the City of Ballarat in 1994.[1]

Sebastopol was named after Sevastopol in the Ukraine, the site of an important Crimean War battle in 1854-55. The stamper battery and rock blasting on the Sebastopol goldfield reminded some of the sounds of battle during the Crimean War.[2]
