Martin Dunn

Martin George Dunn was born in Ballarat in 1870 to John Nankinville Dunn and Mary Jane Speer. [1] Martin Dunn studied Mine Management at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1902.[2] He was a railway employee at the time of his enlistment. He was married to Hilda Frances Mark in 1911 in Ballarat. [3] They lived in Ballarat East [4]. At the time of his enlistment, Martin Dunn was 5'5 3/4" tall and he weighed 11 stone 11 pounds. He had dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. [5] Martin Dunn died in Ballarat aged 58 in 1928 [6]. He is buried in the Ballaarat New Cemetery. [7]

Military Experience

Corporal (543) Martin Dunn was a 43 year old married Railwayman who was living at Ballarat when he enlisted on the 16th July 1915. [8] He was a member of the 2nd Tunnelling Company. [9]. His unit, the The Australian Mining Corps, No 1,embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board the HMAT Ulysses, on the 20th February 1916. [10] On the 10th July 1917, he was reported missing.[11] It was found that Corporal Martin had been taken as a prisoner of war. He was interned at Limberg according to a postcard to his mother, dated 15/7/17.On July 10th he was supervising tunnellers at Nieuport when they were attacked by the Germans. He and his men were cut off and captured after bridges they were to retreat across were destroyed. They were taken prisoner. He was transferred to Dalmen on the 11/9/17. He then went to Lechfeld Bayern 27/9/17. Martin Dunn then interned in Switzerland on 31/8/18. He was repatriated to London on 8/12/18. [12] when he arrived in England, Corporal Dunn was admitted to the Fulham Military Hospital with debility. [13]He returned to Australia on the 5th March 1919.[14], and was discharged from the A.I.F on the 9th June 1919. [15] Corporal Martin Dunn received the Victory medal and the British War medal.[16]
