History

Lionel Joseph Lambert was born in Ballarat on 10 August 1882. His father was Robert Mann Lambert who worked at the Sunshine Harvester Works, Sunshine.[1]

He was an Associate of the Ballarat School of Mines in Mining Engineering attending the School in 1900 and 1901[2], and receiving his Associateship in 1903-4.[3] In 1915 had 14 years practical experience. His postal address before enlistment the Edna May Consolidated Gold Mining Company, Westonia, Western Australia. [4]

In 1917 Lionel Lambert's father, Robert Lambert, changed his address from Wendouree Parade Ballarat to 106 Pleasant Street North, Ballarat.[5]

In 1964 Lionel Lambert's wife wrote:

My husband Lionel Joseph Lambert, passed away four years ago, and I would be grateful it you would send me a copy of his discharge from World War 1, as the original was accidentally destroyed, when I moved, five months ago, from my previous home, and I need it for personal reasons. I cant recall his regimental numbers but his name and rank was -

Military Experience

Lieutenant Lionel Lamb enlisted in the A.I.F. on 20 November 1915 in Western Australia. At that time he was a 33 year old, single, mining engineer. He was assigned to the 5th Tunnelling Company[7]

Lionel Lambert embarked on 25 May 1916 from Melbourne on board the HMAT Warilda, and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 18 July 1916. He was transferred from the 5th Tunnelling Company to the 2nd Tunnelling Company on 25 September 1916.

Lieutenant Lambert returned to Australia on the Anchises on 25 May 1919, and was discharged from the A.I.F. on 30 November 1919.[8]
