Background

The Battle of Fromelles took place on 19 and 20 July 1916. When the attack was called off on the morning of 20 July 1916 over 7,000 British and australian troops had been killed, wounded, captured or missing. The highest casualties were from Australia's 5th Division, fighting alongside the British 61st Division. The battle is the worst loss of life in a 24 hour period in Australia's history.[1]
