History

Frederick Daniel studied Engine Driving and Mining at the Ballarat School of Mines in 1894 and 1898 respectively. [1]

Frederick Berge Daniel (2707) lived in Ballarat at the time of his enlistment. On his enlistment form he stated that he was born in Mid Brighton. Frederick was shown to be 5'51/2" in height, and he weighed 1271/2 pounds. He had pale complexion, blue eyes and fair hair.[2]

His father, George Harry Daniel of Howitt Street Soldier's Hill, Ballarat was listed as his next of kin. He enlisted on the 24th December 1915.[3] His occupation was that of prospector.[4]

Military Experience

Sapper (2707) Frederick Berge Daniel was 39 years and 9 months old, single,and a prospector living at Ballarat North, when he enlisted on the 24th December 1915. [5] He enlisted at first in the Australian Mining Corps Nos 1 - 1447 in the 1 -3 Reinforcements, until February-March 1916. Then from March-April 1916, in the Number 1 Mining Corps, 2 and 3 reinforcements. His AWM embarkation roll number is 16/7/1. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT Euripides on the 4th April 1916. He reached the rank of Sergeant in the 2nd Tunnelling Company. Whilst in France, Sergeant Daniel was hospitalised in France with sciatica on the 7th July 1916, and again for being sick on the 16th July 1916.[6]. From the 8th January 1919 he was admitted to various hospitals with a gastric ulcer, starting with Bath War Hospital on the 8th January. There is also a record of him being admitted to the Barnet War hospital on the 17th January,[7] and later on the 31st January he was admitted to the 1st A.G hospital, Sutton On the 19th February he was released from hospital.[8] Sergeant Daniel returned to Australia on the 1st April 1919.
